Local history enthusiasts in SW16 have a rare opportunity to explore one of Streatham Common's most exclusive hidden gems this month. As part of the annual Lambeth Heritage Festival, the Streatham Society is hosting its highly popular guided tours of the historic Henry Tate Gardens on Sunday, 27 September 2026.

A Glimpse Behind the Gates

Located just off Streatham Common North (SW16 3HA), the Henry Tate Gardens are situated within the private grounds of what was once Park Hill, a grand Grade II-listed Victorian mansion. The estate was originally built in the 1830s but became famous as the home of Sir Henry Tate, the prominent sugar magnate, philanthropist, and founder of the Tate Gallery.

During his residence in the late 19th century, Sir Henry Tate transformed the estate, commissioning beautiful landscaping, a spectacular conservatory, and a series of ornamental features. Today, the grounds are private residential property, meaning they are normally closed to the general public. The upcoming tours offer a rare, permitted look at these beautifully preserved grounds.
